Anxiety and Depression
Recognizing Signs of Anxiety and Depression
Understanding Prolonged Sadness
It is common and proportionate to experience some feelings of fear or nervousness and worry, for example when you need to make a big decision or when you are facing a major life event. But if you notice that those feelings are persistent and your fears feel as if they are taking over a lot of your thinking and for prolonged periods, it could be that you are suffering from anxiety.
Similarly, most of us have experienced sadness or a dip in mood from time to time, especially it there are painful life events to deal with but if the low mood or an empty feeling, or a lack of energy persists for a few weeks and more, it could be that you are experiencing symptoms of depression. And sometimes both conditions can even be experienced at the same time.
Personalized Strategies for Healing
The most important thing to remember is that you are not to blame and you haven’t done anything deliberately to put yourself in either state of anxiety or depression. These are mental health issues and forgiving yourself for experiencing either states can be an important first step in helping yourself through.
The support that I offer doesn’t involve diagnosis, but rather works by offering a space for you to explore your feelings and learning to accept that they exist rather than trying to push them away (understandable but not always helpful!).
I would work with you to help understand potential triggers and to explore helpful approaches that work around you as an individual.
Embracing Professional Help for Recovery
Both depression and anxiety can feel overwhelming and you could easily feel that they were taking over your life, but by reaching out to a therapist, knowing that you don’t have to deal with the symptoms alone, is one of the best ways of starting your journey to management and recovery.
